NOVEMBER 6, 2000 THE RACE:
President MAJOR CANDIDATES:
Democrat - Al Gore
Republican - George W. Bush
THE DL: Too close to call
According to a Reuters review of polls nationwide, George W. Bush has 209 electoral college votes, slightly leading Al Gore's 196. But it labels 133 votes too close to call. To win, a candidate needs 270 out of 538 electoral votes. The battleground states in the West: Washington, Oregon, Nevada, New Mexico.
The battleground states in the Midwest / South: Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Tennesee, Florida
The battleground states in the East: Pennsylvania, Maine. Of the battleground states, only New Mexico (5 electoral votes) has a significant Indian population, with 9.5 percent. But the Indian population of voting age is no doubt smaller. Nevada (4 electoral votes) and Washington (11 electoral votes) have a Native population of 1.8 percent. Related Stories:
