JANUARY 19, 2001

Residents of a Colorado County who opposed a project Secretary of Interior nominee Gale Norton was hired to help approve on Thursday appeared in Washington, DC, to decry her actions.

Norton was hired by a town minister who wanted to build an 82-home project near the town of Buena Vista. But some in the county, including commissioners, opposed it because they said it was out of character with the environment and would damage an elk habitat.

Norton's critics say she intimidated others into approving it. Her defenders say she just did her job as a good attorney.
