DECEMBER 21, 2000 Vice President Al Gore beat Texas Governor George W. Bush by over 539,897 votes. according to a state-by-state tally. Of the four major candidates, Gore had 48.39 percent of the popular vote and Bush had 47.88 percent. Green Party candidate Ralph Nader drew 2.27 percent of the vote while Reform Party candidate Pat Buchanan drew 0.43 percent. Only Bush had enough electral votes -- 271 -- to win the Presidency.
