Bush blocks Clinton decisions

JANUARY 22, 2001

The transition team of President George W. Bush on Saturday quickly moved to delay all pending or proposed rules and regulations made by the Bill Clinton administration.

For any final rules which have not yet gone into effect, the team placed a 60-day delay on their effective date. One controversial rule affected is the roadless forest plan of the US Department of Agriculture. Others expected to be affected are the final determinations to acknowledge the Chinook Tribe and Duwamish Tribe, both of Washington.

For any proposed rules or those which haven't yet been published in the Federal Register, the team is holding them back for review by Bush appointees. A Department of Interior rule which would allow Hopi tribal members to gather baby golden eagles in Wupatki National Monument is expected to be affected as is a decision to extend preliminary recognition to the Nipmuc Nation of Massachusetts.
