Indian opinion on Norton split
JANUARY 24, 2001

Villified by environmental groups, opinion among Indian Country of Secretary of Interior nominee Gale Norton is split, with some saying she could end up being an ally to tribes.

Others, however, say her past history of attacking tribal sovereignty before the Supreme Court and ties to property-rights groups who have fought against tribal religious freedom puts in her a dangerous position at the Department. Her support of oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge also worries some Alaska Natives.
