Linda Chavez wants more immigrants

JANUARY 26, 2001

After withdrawing from consideration as Labor Secretary amid an illegal immigrant scandal, Linda Chavez on Thursday told a Lincoln, Nebraska, crowd that the United States needs to allow more foreigners into the country.

Chavez said she would have worked to do just that had she been confirmed to head the Department of Labor. She supports programs which would give temporary visas to immigrants so they could work in areas where there are labor shortages.

She also reiterated her belief that "nasty" politics ruined her chances of getting a fair shot at the job.
