FEBRUARY 26, 2001

Political cartoonist Gary Trudeau, whose comic strip was pulled from a number of newspapers after he referenced President Bush's alleged drug habits, took a stab at Secretary of Interior Gale Norton this past week.

In a fictional account of the Senate confirmation hearings of an Interior sub-level appointee, Trudeau lightly criticized Norton for her past stances, including support of self-audit environmental laws. Trudeau finally mentioned her by name in Friday's strip and referred to Norton by name and called her "a pinup girl for companies accused of plundering the environment."

Norton's chief of staff didn't respond directly to the cartoon. Gail Schoettler, former lieutenant Governor of Colorado, when Norton was Attorney General, called the cartoon sexist.
