FEBRUARY 7, 2001

Former Representative Rick Lazio (R) of New York is still paying for his loss to Senator Hillary Clinton (D) last November and owes about $3 million dollars but only has about $300,000 cash on hand.

He's writing campaign supporters to help pay for his outstanding debts. Adding to the loss was the return of $124,050 to donors, many of whom had contributed over a $1,000 limit.

The Senate race between Lazio and Clinton was one of the largest in state history. A total of $69.3 million was spent by both candidates.
