MARCH 15, 2001 Tribes in Washington who were some of the biggest supporters of freshman Senator Maria Cantwell (D-Wash) might want to help bail her out of debt. Cantwell spent a lot of money on her winning campaign against Slade Gorton but it was her own. She had lots of money to spend, thanks to a market eager to cash in on RealNetworks, the Internet company which makes RealAudio and RealVideo players. Cantwell was a former executive there. Now that the tech market has bombed, Cantwell's net worth has dropped enough that she will not be paying off her bank loan of $3,221,490 by herself and is instead seeking contributions from supporters throughout the country.
