Indians make racial choices

MARCH 22, 2001

American Indians in Montana on Wednesday offered The Billings Gazette varying reasons on how they filled out the new racial classification question on the Census 2000.

One woman said she identified herself as only American Indian since she identifies strongly with her heritage. Her mother is Indian; her father is White.

Another considered herself solely Indian, but said she had some White ancestors. For her children, she marked both Indian and African-American, the heritage of the father.
