Democrats want adjusted Census figures

MARCH 29, 2001 Democratic Congressional leaders on Wednesday pushed Commerce Department officials to release adjusted Census 2000 numbers not just the actual head counts. The effort to release adjusted census numbers stems from a concern that traditional Democrat constituencies of minorities are undercounted. Census officials are reluctant to release adjusted numbers because the officials are unsure as to the reliability of the adjusted figures. The acting director of the Census Bureau yesterday responded with a statement directed to the Presidential Members of the U.S. Census Monitoring Board. He asked for patience on the issue since the Bureau is still undergoing technical analysis of the Census. A recent non-government approved report showed that urban centers and places with increased minority population have large undercounts. But Republicans and Census officials have criticized the report for its reliability. Acting Director William G. Barron said the "methodology used to calculate them are seriously flawed." Census data is used to draw congressional districts by states and is also used to appropriate federal funds. Get Census Bureau Statement:
