Cantwell's stumbling blocks

MARCH 29, 2001

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer today features a profile of freshman Senator Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) and her first months in office, noting that there have been occasional stumbles after her historic defeat of Slade Gorton (R).

The biggest appears to be her slow response to putting together a staff in her Washington, DC, office. Her actions caused confusion, say observers, who question how effective she'll be in the long run should she continue to make similar mistakes.

According to an aide who wished to remain anonymous, Cantwell is also a hard-ball when it comes to her staff. The staffer tells Seattle PI correspondent Charles Pope: "She was pretty unforgiving. I saw men cry. People were willing to tell her she was wrong, but if you were going to do it, you had to put on full body armor."

Cantwell has been reaching out to supporters for campaign contributions. She had financed her run by herself but now owes money to creditors.
