Some Wampanoags return home

APRIL 2, 2001

Since winning federal recognition more than a decade ago, the Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe has seen tribal members return home to Martha's Vineyard, an island off the coast of Massachusetts.

Some 37 percent of Aquinnah are American Indian, according to Census 2000. Wampanoag administrator Laurie Perry says tribal housing has helped draw members back to the island.

The Wampanoag Tribe in Mashpee is state recognized but the Indian population is just 3 percent in the community. The tribe has been seeking federal recognition since the 1970s.
