MAY 16, 2001 The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee today begins the confirmation hearings of J. Stephen Griles, President Bush's pick as Deputy Secretary of the Interior. Like Secretary Gale Norton, Griles was part of James Watt's Department of Interior. While he was there, he fought to open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and the offshore areas of Florida and California to oil and gas development. Griles would be second in command at the Interior. He is president of a lobbying firm that represented clients in the oil and energy industry. The hearing begins at 9:30 AM Eastern Standard Time. The committee will consider a number of issues in addition to Griles' nomination. Listen to the Hearing:
