Activist: Nixon was Indian saviour

MAY 21, 2001 Will President Richard Nixon's role in changing federal Indian policy be one of his forgotten legacies? Former activist and current Native American studies director at Sonoma State University Ed Castillo would hope not. Castillo credits Nixon with signing the Indian Self-determination Act into law and officially ending the policy of termination. With Republicans back in the White House and nostalgic for the past, Nixon and President Ronald Reagan are back in vogue and so are their Indian activities, for better or worse. Get the Story:
