MAY 2, 2001 Despite facing scrutiny from Congress, the President, and the American public, FBI Director Louis J. Freeh was able to weather political storms and often come out on top. The spy scandal involving Agent Robert P. Hanssen was one of the most recent. Accepting responsibility in a secret committee hearing, Freeh walked away with a request for icnreased funding for his agency. Other battles Freeh underwent were the Waco attack in Texas, the wrongful investigation of the Olympic bombing in Atlanta, the Wen Ho Lee spy case, and Whitewater and campaign finance investigations.
