Campbell: No bed of roses for Jeffords

MAY 24, 2001

Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.) met on Wednesday with fellow member Jim Jeffords of Vermont but told the Denver Post the expected party-ditcher won't find a "bed of roses" by leaving the GOP.

Campbell himself left the Democratic ranks to join the Republican party in 1995, when the GOPs gained control of the Senate. He often asserts the change in party wasn't such a big deal but tells the Rocky Mountain News the aftermath was very stressful.

But Jeffords' switch apparently is, as least when it comes to Campbell. As chairman of the Indian Affairs Committee, Campbell would presumably lose the position to ranking Democrat Daniel Inouye of Hawaii.

The change would have little impact for Indian Country as both Campbell and Inouye are considered strong tribal advocates.
