MAY 30, 2001

The Supreme Court on Tuesday declined to review a case which forced an Indiana city to remove a pillar engraved with the Ten Commandments.

The decision to turn down the case was criticized by Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, who said the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals may have decided the case incorrectly. Rehnquist was joined by Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas in his dissent.

It takes the vote of four Justices to grant certiorari to a case.
