Actor and activist Russell Means is the "Indian in the Spotlight" today on the nationally-broadcast radio program Native America Calling.

Expect the part-time Santa Fe resident to promote his bid to become Governor of New Mexico. He has been nominated by the Libertarian Party to replace Gary Johnson (R) who can't seek re-election due to term limits.

But there is potential problem with his 2002 run. A 1975 felony conviction in South Dakota (from his defiant American Indian Movement days) might prevent him from holding public office; a rigth Means and they party say they will fight in court if necessary.

Still, other residents might not take too kindly on Means' repeated attempts to escape jurisdiction in Indian Country. In the most notable case so far, he tried to prevent the Navajo Nation court system from prosecuting him for allegedly beating up an elderly Omaha Nation man -- his former father-in-law.

The Navajo Nation Supreme Court has upheld its jurisdiction over Means, who is an enrolled tribal member of the Oglala Lakota Tribe at Pine Ridge in South Dakota.
