JUNE 22, 2001

President Bush today will name California judge Carolyn B. Kuhl to a spot on the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Kul is currently a Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge. She worked in the Justice Department under President Reagan.

The 9th Circuit covers California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Montana, Idaho, Nevada, Alaska, and Hawaii. It hears a number of cases affecting tribes.

All but one of the Senate's 50 Republicans have urged Bush to consider Slade Gorton for a spot on the 9th Circuit. John McCain of Arizona opposes Gorton for a judgeship due to his views on tribal sovereignty.
