JUNE 5, 2001

A report of the US Civil Rights Commission criticizes Florida officials including Governor Jeb Bush and Secretary of State Katherine Harris over the handling of last year's Presidential election, according to a draft obtained by the Washington Post.

African-American voters were disenfranchised by the electoral system, says the draft. Fifty-four percent of votes rejected last year were case by African-American voters.

The Commission, however, found no evidence officials conspired to disenfranchise minority voters. The report is due to be released after members vote on it.

The Commission may ask Attorney General John Ashcroft and the state of Florida to investigate if any civil rights laws were violated.
