Bush won't help charity discriminate

WEDNESDAY, JULY 11, 2001

The White House on Tuesday announced that it will not consider a proposal to allow charities like the Salvation Army to be exempt from federal laws prohibiting discrimination against gays.

The decision came after an internal Salvation Army report claimed that President Bush promised the charity an exemption from the laws in exchange for promoting his faith-based initiative. Early on in the day, the White House acknowledged they have received the request but that it was under "consideration."

Later in the evening, the administration said it will not consider the proposal at all. In either case, Democratic lawmakers said they want to hold hearings in the matter.
