Consumer nominee expected to fail

The White House on Tuesday defended Mary Sheila Gall, President Bush's pick to head the Consumer Product Safety Commission, but lawmakers from both political parties said they expect nomination to fail.

If that happens, Gall would be the first of Bush's nominees to be voted down by the Senate. While some nominees have been stalled, no committee has outright rejected any appointee.

The Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee is expected to vote on Gall's confirmation tomorrow. Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-S.D.) said he will not seek a full floor vote if the commitee does not approve her.
