Jesse Helms to retire from Senate

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 22, 2001

Senator Jesse Helms of North Carolina plans to announce his retirement from Congress today, said sources close to the five-term feisty Republican.

The announcement will be made on a North Carolina television station, the sources added. Helms turns 80 in October.

Elizabeth Dole has said she would seek the Republican nomination should Helms retire.

Helms term ends in 2003.
