Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico -- the birthplace of the atomic bomb -- was criticized on Monday for not spending federal funds on local businesses.

At a field hearing held by the House Small Business Committee, chairman Don Manzullo (R-Ill.) said the lab's record on local spending is "disgraceful." David Cordova, director of planning and economic development for the Eight Northern Indian Pueblos Council Inc. said the lab spent less than $5,000 last year with Pueblo businesses in the area.

Cordova also said the lab doesn't have any contracts with any Pueblo businesses.

Deputy Director Joe Salgado said the lab spends 35 percent of its funds on small businesses -- although just one-third of that amount is spent locally.
