FRIDAY, AUGUST 31, 2001

Delegates and representatives of various groups have begun arriving in South Africa for the United Nations World Conference Against Racism, which begins today.

After some deliberation, the United States is sending a mid-level team headed by an official from the State Department. One of their goals is to get rid of statements equating the creation of the state of Israel to racism from any statements of the conference.

Representatives of various indigenous groups have traveled to the conference. It is taking place in Durban.
