Head of consumer agency to resign

THURSDAY, AUGUST 9, 2001

Ann Brown, appointed by President Clinton to head the Consumer Product Safety Commission, said on Wednesday she will resign from the agency by November 1.

The announcement surprised the White House but sources told The Washington Post that President Bush might try to remove Brown from her post anyway. Bush's pick to head the agency, Mary Sheila Gall, was rejected in a party-line vote.

If Brown leaves, vice-chair Thomas Moore will take over until Bush can designate another appointee. Gall is a commissioner but isn't in line to be promoted.

Brown's term wasn't set to expire until 2006.
