FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2001 Sources close to the investigation of last week's terrorist attacks told The Washington Post that the alleged hijackers of American Airlines Flight 77 did not appear to target the White House or the Capitol as aides have said. The sources said whoever piloted the flight, which departed from Dulles International Airport near Washington, DC, intended to hit the Pentagon. Radar tracking information shows the plane never entered restricted airspace near the Capitol, the paper says. The Bush administration has kept Reagan National Airport closed because of its proximity to the Capitol. The airplane which crashed in Pennsylvania showed an unusual climb in altitude which could be attributed to an attempt by passengers and crew to overtake the alleged hijackers of the flight, according to the paper's review of air tracking information.
