Taliban interview aired over U.S. objection

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2001 Over the objections of the State Department, the Voice of America, a federally supported international broadcasting organization, aired a report on Tuesday featuring an interview with a Taliban leader. VOA at first agreed not to broadcast the report, which has an interview with Mullah Mohammed Omar, the head of the Taliban that controls Afghanistan. But after an interview with the exiled Afghan king fell through, the report was aired. The State Department has a seat on Voice of America's nine-member board of governors. Get the Story:
