N.M. tribes to offer political maps
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 2001

Several New Mexico tribes and Pueblos will be submitting their own legislative maps for state lawmakers to consider as the redraw the state's political districts.

Laguna Pueblo, the Navajo Nation, the Jicarilla Apache Nation, and the Eight Northern Indian Pueblos Council will be sending in their own maps. Tribal leaders have called on the Legislature not to dilute Native American voting power.

Several plans are already under consideration by lawmakers. The Navajo Nation supports one that unites Isleta Pueblo with other reservations. Other plans consolidate Native voters in various U.S. Congressional districts.

Native Americans are about 9 percent of the state population.
