WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2001

Now that Congress is back in session, the battle is on to pass a number of federal spending bills without reaching into Social Security receipts.

President Bush and Congressional leaders met yesterday to discuss the budget. They all agreed not to cut into Social Security funds, although analysts say that may be impossible due to a slowing economy, Bush's tax cut and proposed increases in spending for the military and education.

Bush and Congres have reached released their own forecasts of the federal budget over the next few years. Bush's was much more optimistic about the surplus than Congress' version.

The current fiscal year ends September 30.
