NCAI kicks off in Spokane

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 2001

The annual convention of the National Congress of American Indians officially begins today in Spokane, Washington.

Hot topics include the reorganization of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, tribal sovereignty and the Supreme Court, energy policy and economic development.

Today, the gathering saw addresses by members of Congress, including Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), new to the Senate and the Indian Affairs Committee. Tomorrow, Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb will speak to tribal leaders.

Wednesday will see a presentation on the reorganization by McCaleb and Deputy Secretary J. Steven Griles.
