Pequot mediator criticized by foe

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 5, 2001 A Democrat who would hope to steal a Congressional seat from Rep. Rob Simmons (R-Conn.) said the freshman lawmaker should not try and withdraw from already failed talks between the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and three Connecticut towns. Joe Courtney is one of several Democrats seeking his party's nomination for the state's 1st Congressional district, which will be up for grabs next year. He told The New London Day that Simmons' attempt to remove himself from the discussions is "disappointing." Simmons has asked the tribe and the towns whether he should continue hosting talks over trust lands. He gave them until later this month to provide a response. Get the Story:
