THURSDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2001 Casinos, affirmative action and an interest in heritage are among the reasons being cited for the large -- 26 percent -- increase in Americans claiming to be American Indian and/or Alaska Native. But perhaps Mike Miller, spokesperson for the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, said it best. "It's cool to be an American Indian now," he told The Christian Science Monitor. Of course, some people in Indian Country might remember it was "cool" to be Indian back in the 1970s, too. It just might be a fad that occurs every twenty or so years, or every time Cher gets a new haircut. Get the Story:
