GAO to sue White House on records

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 30, 2002

The General Accounting Office has decided to sue the White House in order to get more information about the president's energy task force.

In a letter to members of Congress and copied to President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney, GAO Comptroller General David Walker announced his decision. "We would have strongly preferred to avoid litigation in connection with this matter," he wrote, "but . . GAO will take the steps necessary to file suit."

"This will be the first time that GAO has filed suit to enforce our access rights against a federal official," Walker continued. "We hope it is the last time that we will have to do so."

The decision is not a surprise and was expected as early as today. Walker did not set out a timeline as to when he would actually file suit.
