There are 729,533 people in America who claim some form of Cherokee heritage, according to a Census Bureau report being released today.

And there are 298,197 claiming Navajo heritage, the report states. The results come from the Census 2000, which allowed respondents to report more than once race.

A total of 4.1 million Americans claimed some form of American Indian heritage. The number of those enrolled in a tribe, however, is less.
