A federal civil rights lawsuit has been filed on behalf of three members of the Yankton Sioux Tribe over the way a school district chooses its board members.

The American Civil Liberties Union contends that the Wagner school district violates the voting rights of Native Americans by holding at-large elections. The district contains a 40 percent Native population but no Native representation on the school board.

The lawsuit comes on the heels of a victory in Montana which found a county's at-large system to violate Native voting rights. The suit was also filed by the ACLU.
