State may drop 'squaw' names

OCTOBER 11, 2000

The Wisconsin Geographic Names Council is considering dropping "squaw" from all public place names.

The council has already approved the name change of Squaw Bay to Mawikwe Bay, which means "weeping woman." Other requests have been made and local tribal leaders say the use of "squaw" is demeaning and deragatory.

Other states have laws requiring public place names to be renamed if they contain the word "squaw."
