Campbell: I'm not Indians' Senator

OCTOBER 12, 2000

In response to whether or not he'd support legislation changing Columbus Day, Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell said he's Colorado's Senator, not the "Indian senator at large."

The Republican Senator added that he isn't a big fan of Columbus and that celebrating Columbus Day "perpetuates a myth that nobody believes anymore." But he stopped short of supporting legislation changing the holiday because he said it would add fuel to the fire.

The state was the first in the nation to institute a Columbus Day. Other state and cities have changed their days to reflect a celebration of Native American cultures.
