OCTOBER 19, 2000 The partner of activist and author Winona LaDuke, Kevin Gasco, owes more than $8,000 in child support to his former wife, according to a report by The Associated Press. But the Green Party Vice Presidential candidate feels the unsettled matter is the business of Gasco and his wife, Colleen. Gasco reportedly owes more than $8,000 in child support for the couple's three children. Colleen Gasco lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The two have not divorced yet. Gasco and the Green Party Vice Presidential candidate also have a son together, Gwekaanimid Gasco. The eight-month-old Gwekaanimid, whose name means "shifting winds," accompanies LaDuke while she is on the campaign trail and are occasionally joined by Gasco. Nationwide, child support is a major issue. According to the Census Bureau, more than half of the parents who are owed child support, 59 percent, don't receive the full amount they are due. Additionally, less than one-third receive partial payments. The average amount received by custodial parents is $3,600, a figure unchanged from 1993 to 1997, the date for which the Census Bureau has released its most recent report. Gasco and LaDuke also own a coffee roasting business on the White Earth Reservation in Minnesota, where they live. Muskrat Coffee is located in Ponsford, Minnesota, and operates out of LaDuke's home.
