Editorial: Gover action not ethical

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2001 In an editorial today, The New London Day criticizes former Assistant Secretary Kevin Gover, saying his decision to work for a law firm after departing the Clinton administration "may be legal, but it makes no ethical sense." The paper centers on federal recognition decisions made during Gover's tenure. The paper says Gover didn't play by the rules and made "capricious" decisions affeting petitioning groups. The paper also says Michael Anderson, a top aide who replaced Gover for a few weeks in January, abused his power when he proposed to recognize the Duwamish Tribe of Washington and the Nipmuc Nation of Massachusetts. Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb last week reversed the decision. The paper does not say what Gover should have done once he left the Clinton administration. Going unemployed was a possible option but the paper is silent on what was "ethical" for Gover to do. Capricious and abuse of power are legal standards typically used in cases challenging administrative decisions. Get the Story:
