The candidates: Affirmative action
OCTOBER 25, 2000

The Associated Press asked Presidential candidates George W. Bush and Al Gore for their view on affirmative action.

Echoing what he said in the final debate last week, Bush said he supports what he calls "affirmative access." He opposes quotas and doesn't want minority-owned businesses to be considered for federal contracts separately from other businesses.

Al Gore said he opposes quotas but supports affirmative action. He said affirmative action programs shouldn't be ended but targeted to make sure they are legal because they are necessary.
