DECEMBER 14, 2000

About 20 Native Americans gathered at the University of Alaska in Anchorage to hold a protest over a poem which is being attacked as racist.

The poem, called "Indian Girls," is about Alaska Native women living in an urban environment. It was written by Linda McCarriston, a non-Native professor at the school.

Diane Benson, a Tlingit student in McCarriston's class has launched protest of the poem, which appeared in a national poetry journal. Many feel it stereotypes Alaska Native women and men. They want McCarrison to apologize for it.
