Govt use of Hopi word criticized

DECEMBER 14, 2000 Objections are being raised to the use of a Hopi word to describe structures the Los Alamos National Laboratory uses to perform nuclear experiments. The lab calls them kivas, a Hopi word for a sacred, religious building. Kivas are present in all Pueblos in New Mexico and in Hopi villages in Arizona. Pueblo leaders and others are asking the lab not to use the word because they say it disrespects Native beliefs. Get the Story:
