EDITORIAL: Tribes deserve say in casino fight

FEBRUARY 14, 2001

The Lincoln Journal Star in an editorial today says Nebraska's tribes deserve the right to decide if they want to operate casinos on their land.

Class II gaming is permitted by the state but won't negotiate Class III, or Vegas-style, gaming. The paper says the state has a lottery so there is no reason to prohibit tribes from expanding their gaming operations.

The paper says the majority of Nebraskans support expanded gaming and that voters could start up a petition to change the state constitution. An amendment proposal failed to make it out of the legislature on Monday.
