FEBRUARY 16, 2001

Dennis Anderson of The Minneapolis Star Tribune writes today that former President Bill Clinton's pardon of an Illinois woman is questionable not only because she broke federal eagle protection law but because she was linked to the Democratic Party.

Peg Bargon was asked by an Illinois Democratict official to make a dreamcatcher for Hillary Clinton. She gave it to the freshman Senator on a visit to the state in 1994.

It turns out the dreamcatcher contained bald eagle feathers in violation of federal law. Bargon was also selling them for $60 and marketed them as "First Lady Dreamcatchers."

Clinton eventually surrendered her dreamcatcher to federal agents. Anderson says Bargon has made no claims to be American Indian, which might allow her to obtain a permit to possess, but not market, eagle feathers or eagle parts.
