FEBRUARY 22, 2001 Are they back? The infamous Pequot Letters as published in The New London Day? Possibly...or maybe the paper needed some filler today. BLUMENTHAL: ANTI-INDIAN, ANTI-SOVEREIGNTY
"I am completely outraged that Attorney General Richard Blumenthal has escaped criticism for his role as advocate and lobbyist for virtually every anti-Indian crusade in New England and Connecticut in particular. He opposes petitions for the Golden Hill Paugussets, the Eastern Pequots, the Paucatuck Eastern Pequots, the Schaghticokes, the Nipmucs, Bureau of Indian Affairs' long-standing recognition process, BIA's decision-making authority, and Mashantucket land-claim and annexation efforts.."
LETTER: Is it no Indians in my back yard? (Michael E. Jones. Letter to Editor. The New London Day 2/22) INTEGRATION OR EXTERMINATION
"Historically, the government's treatment of American Indians has been shameful. Also shameful is that some Indians disingenuously equate integration with extermination. Atoning for past injustices by creating a Balkanized mosaic of up to 550 separate sovereign nations throughout the U.S. is ludicrous."
LETTER: Undermining a united nation (Gerald Drury. Letter to Editor. The New London Day 2/22) AFRAID OF A PEQUOT EMPIRE?
"Attorney General Richard Blumenthal and the three towns that have been standing up for their own sovereignty for the past eight years do not believe all of southeastern Connecticut will be annexed. No one believes all businesses and residents will suddenly become willing sellers even if they desired to buy all that land. The danger lies with another three-letter word the court could have used but perhaps was afraid it would be too scary."
LETTER: Annexation possibilities frighten (Betty Perkowski. Letter to Editor. The New London Day 2/22)
