FEBRUARY 26, 2001 Wampanoag elder Wamsutta Frank B. James died at the age of 77 at his home in Chatham, Massachusetts. In 1970, the state asked James to give a speech on the 350th anniversary of the Pilgrims landing on Plymouth Rock. James agreed but when state officials found out he included references to the genocide of the state's tribes, they asked him to rewrite it. James refused and turned down the invitation.
