Pequot Sachem: Stop the War
FEBRUARY 6, 2001

In an editorial published in tomorrow's issue of Indian Country Today, Chief Roy E. Sebastian, sachem for life of the Eastern Pequot Tribe of Connecticut, calls on Indian Country to help stop the "war" on federal recognition.

Along with the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe, who share the same reservation in Connecticut, the tribe has been the target of criticism since the BIA decided to extend preliminary recognition to them last year. The state and three town leaders have filed suit against the Department of Interior and the Bureau of Indian Affairs, seeking a rescindment of the decisions.

Sebastian says this battle extends far beyond his state and is calling on others to help fight the "war on recognition."
