MARCH 13, 2001

In an editorial today, Lance C. Johnson, managing editor of The New London Day, offers his view of Monday's meeting between the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and three Connecticut towns.

Although he says there wasn't much talk and no action, Johnson says both sides made some concessions. He says the tribe has shown they are willing to involve the towns in future land-use plans and the towns have softened their "no more land" position expressed by a number of citizens.

But he says the real proof will come when the tribe offers its proposed settlement to the towns of Ledyard, North Stonington, and Preston. The tribe plans on making an offer sometime soon over the towns' opposition to adding more land to the reservation.
